Managers’ reaction
Didier Deschamps: We were efficient and solid defensively because apart from half a chance, we left nothing to this Austrian team which had caused us a lot more problems at home in June (1-1) . We had little time to prepare for this meeting, we adapted. Jonathan Clauss brought a lot of things, we saw him perhaps a little higher than Ferland Mendy because there was often Kylian (Mbappé) who positioned himself in front on the left lane. In offensive contribution and defensive security, they did the job. I expected to have more difficulties but our good positioning and the fact of sliding well did not allow this Austrian team to express themselves.
Ralf Rangnick: “It is not surprising considering difference between the two nations. When you see the way France played. We speak about his injuries, but everyone in the reserve would start in our team.
“We had opportunities and controlled well at the start of the match. But the way we conceded the goal was a shame. We should have played more physically but it’s not so easy. However, they had three defenders and it’s also a question of quality. I dare say that if Kylian had played for us. It would not have been the same match.”
