Kieran Maguire is a British finance guru, author and broadcaster. He is well known for his works and expertise in the world of football.
He recently spoke with Football Insider‘s Adam Williams in an interview. Where he went on to discuss the expansion of the UEFA Champions League from the 2024-25 season.
He explained what the change in format would mean to various clubs of varied historic success. Maguire considered West Ham a club that is on the hunt for Champions League football currently and the disadvantage it would bring about.
He would go on to contrast their situation with the clubs that have been successful over the last few years and how they would receive an influx of million despite not being successful domestically in the preceding season.
“West Ham know that the ‘sneaky six’ are trying to ensure a closed shop,” Kieran Maguire said.
“Even if West Ham themselves don’t qualify for the Champions League, being in it can be worth up to £150m per season.
“If places are going to go to clubs who haven’t won anything for ages but have a good coefficient, that gives those clubs a huge advantage over West Ham.
“It, therefore, makes sense to see the dissatisfaction with such an approach. Because it goes against the principles of sporting merit.“
