Klopp apologises: “I am responsible for this mess”. Jürgen Klopp makes no bones about it: Liverpool is having a tough season. The German manager emphatically puts his hand in his own bosom and apologises to the supporters.
“I am sorry for our supporters that we are not having the year they wished they had”
Liverpool played a heavyweight encounter against Arsenal on Sunday afternoon. Last season, The Reds finished 23 points above Arsenal. The situation has now completely reversed. Following an incredible fixture on Sunday, the Reds are 29 points behind the Gunners of North London.
“I am sorry for our supporters that we are not having the year they wished they had,” Klopp told Sky Sports. According to the manager, the fact that he led the club to great heights and no less than six prizes in recent years no longer counts. “I’m not at all concerned with what we did last year or the years before,” Klopp assured ahead of the fixture.
Klopp doesn’t beat around the bush: “I’m 100 percent responsible for this mess. And that’s really not fun.” The experienced coach is still looking for explanations for the remarkable free fall after the impressive last season.
“What you see is that more teams that performed at an extremely high level last year are now struggling. Even Man City, they still play sensational football, but they have fewer points,” Klopp said.
“At some point you pay a price for the intensity you deliver, maybe that’s what’s going on with us this season. That doesn’t excuse the next 10 games, but it could explain why we’re not at our top level,” Klopp said.
“We just can’t find a way to perform consistently. It’s a super strange season. We’ve had the two biggest victories in our history, but a week later we can’t do it anymore. World class players reach a strange level. It’s also a matter of self-confidence. We have to find a way out of this, that’s tough. But if it were easy they wouldn’t pay me so much money for it,” he concluded.
Investigation into very striking action assistant referee at Anfield
The England Refereeing Commission (PGMOL) is set to investigate the very high-profile incident at half-time between Liverpool and Arsenal. One of the linesmen appeared to be guilty of an elbow strike.
After the halftime signal, a very remarkable incident occurred on the field. Assistant referee Constantine Hatzidakis appeared to elbow Liverpool back Andy Robertson.
The PGMOL says in a statement that it is aware of the incident: “We’ll look into it when the game is over.”
