Liverpool 1-0 Brentford: Mohamed Salah has been showered with compliments after scoring his 186th goal for Liverpool against Brentford (1-0) on Saturday. The Egyptian attacker is now on the all-time top scorers list alongside club icon Steven Gerrard.
Praise for Salah after a new milestone
Salah’s goal meant Liverpool recorded their sixth league win in a row. Afterwards, manager Jürgen Klopp was lyrical about the club’s top scorer, who now has thirty goals in all competitions. “For us it is clear, he is a greatness. His numbers are exceptional,” the German manager told Sky Sports afterwards. “And I don’t see him stopping either, because it’s just in his nature. As an attacker you must have the desire to score goals.”
Klopp also pointed out that Salah has also prepared a lot of goals. “He is very often involved in the goals we score, with the last pass, winning the ball or being the finisher himself. That makes him very special, but we all know that. When he’s in the studio as an analyst in a few years, everyone will realize how good he was. Many people don’t appreciate our players enough while they are still playing. He really is a great player,” Klopp added.
Club icon Jamie Carragher fully agreed with that. “The club is very fortunate to have had some great goalscorers. If Salah retires, he will go down in history as one of the best,” Carragher praised. “We often talk about Virgil (van Dijk), but so does Salah. These purchases changed the course of the club. Salah was perhaps the best signing, he is Liverpool’s best player this season.”
Hunt for a Champions League spot
He concluded, “And that says something in a difficult year. Due to the narrow victory over Brentford, Liverpool can still hope to qualify for the Champions League, although Klopp previously stated that the gap with Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United is too great. It may be too late, but better late than ever. Today was the best performance I’ve seen in my life defending standard situations against the most dangerous team in standard situations I’ve played against.”
