It has been a huge triumph for Luis Suárez to return to his old nest. The overall victory represented the pinnacle of El Pistolero’s comeback.
In July, Suárez made a surprise visit back to his first love Nacional in preparation for the next World Cup. There was no more losing after he returned to El Tri, thus his impact was instantly apparent. The concrete outcome of that contribution, which included six goals among others, was the Clausura title.
With that victory, they earned a spot in the championship game against Liverpool, the Apertura’s victor. On Sunday, Nacional also lifted the Uruguayan national championship, with Suárez as the goldcrest.
The former Ajax player scored the Nacional goal during regulation time, and his 2-1 in overtime set for the ultimate 4-1 triumph. Suárez, who (for the time being) played his final game for Nacional, had unequivocal feedback from trainer Pablo Repetto after the match: “He is a player who has been touched by a magic wand and who delivers when it counts. Even if he doesn’t, we as a club and as supporters are grateful to him. We don’t know what the future has for him.”

Following the game, El Pistolero had the following to say: “Obviously, I am appreciative and happy. I really believe that every effort is rewarded, and I also think that this outstanding team, which made several sacrifices from the start of the season with a new coach, through setbacks, and suffered criticism, is now recognised for its strength and rebelliousness. I believe that this team included guys who were young yet showed a strong commitment. It makes me extremely delighted to conclude it this way because it gives me the impression that I made the right decision.”
“People have shown me a lot of affection and are continually thanking me for coming back, like I mentioned at the beginning. I came here for them, really enjoyed them, and have run out of on-field ways to express my gratitude. The crowd-pleasing acts made it a complete, flawless evening. I am really grateful to have had this day.”
