Luis Suárez has reached a verbal agreement with Grêmio on a two-year contract, according to various media in South America. With an annual salary of approximately 3.3 million euros, Suárez would become the highest-paid player of the Brazilian club at the age of 35.
Grêmio was promoted from Serie B to Série A last season and is trying to put together a strong selection to survive at the highest level. Suárez must become the club’s flagship. The Uruguayan is also in the interest of Mexican Cruz Azul, which reportedly offered 2.8 million euros a year.
Suárez would have given his yes to Grêmio in a video call on Friday. His agent is currently handling the final details. Grêmio hopes to be able to present Suárez as a ‘Christmas present’ to the supporters, but it is not yet clear whether the transfer will indeed be completed before Christmas.
Suárez returned to his former club Nacional in the summer of 2022. His contract expires at the turn of the year, so Suárez can transfer on a free transfer in just over a week. Grêmio vice president Paulo Caleffi confirmed this week that he wanted to talk to representatives of Suárez.
Luis Suárez’s message to Uruguay fans
The last we heard from Luis Suárez was via Instagram after the elimination at the World Cup. The attacker states in a message that Uruguay is ‘not respected’.
Saying goodbye to the World Cup hurts a lot. But we have peace of mind knowing that we gave EVERYTHING for our country. “I’m proud to be URUGUAYAN, even though THEY DON’T RESPECT US. Thanks to all Uruguayans who have supported us in all corners of the world!”
Suárez said in a television interview that he was “disappointed and angry” after the 0-2 win over Ghana, which was not enough to continue. Uruguay eventually fell one goal short. According to Suárez, the team had earned at least two penalties against Ghana. The veteran stated that FIFA is ‘always against Uruguay’.
