Manchester City and Liverpool have chosen to step in after previous gatherings between the two groups of fans ended poorly. The two biggest English clubs have written a letter to their fans ahead of their matchup in the Carabao Cup’s fourth round.
The letter requests that any occurrences that “cause damage” be reported by fans. The letter from Liverpool chairman Billy Hogan and City chairperson Ferran Soriano states that “the passion and enthusiasm of our fans when we play against each other – at the Etihad Stadium or at Anfield – is part of what makes games between our teams so unique.”
“We are aware of your dedication to creating a welcoming, accepting, and amazing matchday environment at the stadium. Unfortunately, we also know that a small percentage of fans are to blame for actions and behaviours that are inappropriate for our game based on recent encounters between our clubs. To handle this behaviour and guarantee that the reputation of both of our clubs is upheld. We kindly want your complete support,” they added.
Jürgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, was accused of engaging in xenophobic behaviour following the two teams’ previous Premier League encounter, which ended with a 1-0 victory for Liverpool in mid-October. This prompted Klopp to file a lawsuit. Guardiola stated that during that game, coins were thrown at him.
Virgil van Dijk is not currently expected to play for Liverpool against Manchester City in the League Cup. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Jordan Henderson are expected to be available to the Liverpool boss on Thursday.
Klopp’s words
Following their loss from the World Cup, Klopp has subsequently received the three World Cup travellers to Dubai, where Liverpool finished the offseason workouts with a 4-1 friendly victory over AC Milan. It is unclear if they will be available for Thursday’s game against Manchester City.
“There is a chance, of course. They’re practising already here, “said Klopp. “Although Virg is also exercising here, I don’t believe we will attempt to use him. Trent and Hendo are still up in the air. Additionally, we are aware that a virus is spreading throughout Europe and England. We sincerely hope that this won’t cause any issues.”
The commencement of the second half of the football season, the League Cup match against Manchester City, excites Klopp. “We’ll decide on Wednesday who can participate on Thursday. The game would be quite entertaining,” he said.
