On Wednesday evening, North London clubs Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur were both eliminated from the League Cup. Brighton & Hove Albion beat Arsenal 1-3 at the Emirates Stadium, while Antonio Conte’s team lost 2-0 to newly promoted Nottingham Forest.
Arsenal 1 – 3 Brighton & Hove Albion
Brighton had the better of the encounter at the Emirates Stadium, where Jol Veltman played ninety minutes, but had to chase after twenty minutes. Reiss Nelson passed the ball to Eddie Nketiah, who turned it into the far corner. The Gunners were then harmed by a veteran. Karl Hein, Arsenal’s debut Estonian goalkeeper, knocked out Danny Welbeck. Welbeck had to deal with the resultant penalty. Hein was pushed into the opposite corner by him.
After the break, Nketiah got near to second, but his shot struck the post. Brighton, on the other hand, had a sharp eye: Kaoru Mitoma put The Seagulls ahead after just under an hour. The Japanese had only arrived after halftime. Tariq Lamptey delivered the verdict on the home team twenty minutes before the end of the game. He rounded the far turn after accelerating. Arsenal hasn’t won the League Cup in over three decades.
Nottingham Forest 2 – 0 Tottenham Hotspur
Forest got off to a good start and was already dangerous through Jesse Lingard, whose shot flew just wide. Tottenham, where Harry Kane started brightly in the middle, couldn’t accomplish anything. Steve Cooper’s side was rewarded for their outstanding effort in the second half. Back on the left Renan Lodi rushed up and curled the ball into the corner brilliantly. Then the floodgates burst: Sam Surridge squandered two golden opportunities, and Lingard made it 2-0.
Despite the catastrophic circumstances, Kane was substituted, a statement from Conte that this competition is not his top concern. Forest’s Orel Mangala received two yellow cards in a few minutes, but Tottenham couldn’t truly endanger the home team even with 10 men. As a result, the Spurs, who have been watching the trophy cabinet accumulate dust since 2008, have forfeited at least one shot at a prize. Hence, both North London clubs faced the same fate.
