The first four quarter-finalists of the League Cup tournament were determined last night. Newcastle United won against AFC Bournemouth, while Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Southampton did what they had to do.
Newcastle United 1-0 AFC Bournemouth
Botman had a starting place at Newcastle United for the first official game after the World Cup. Former Feyeno player Marcos Senesi kicked off with the guests. The best chances at St. James’ Park were for the hosts. Callum Wilson had the ball in early on, but his goal was disallowed for offside.
Halfway through the second half it was finally breakthrough for Newcastle. Kieran Trippier looked for Wilson with a high cross and in an ultimate attempt to defend, Adam Smith, unfortunately, worked the ball into his own goal: 1-0. The Magpies can continue to hope for their first prize since 1955.
Milton Keynes Dons 0-3 Leicester City
Leicester City had a simple evening visiting the number 22 of the League One. Brendan Rodgers’ team put things in order within half an hour via goals from Youri Tielemans and Ayoze Pérez. Early in the second half, Jamie Vardy put an end to all the tension.
Leicester thus continued the excellent form of the last weeks before the World Cup. The Foxes got off to a dramatic start to the season but won five of their last six games before the break. So, another victory was added on Tuesday.
Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-0 Gillingham
Julen Lopetegui made his debut at Wolverhampton Wanderers with a win. The Spaniard had to wait a very long time for his team’s redeeming opening goal. Gillingham, the last of League Two, the fourth tier in England, held on impressively for a long time. In the 78th minute, however, Wolves received a penalty, which was used by Raúl Jiménez. Rayan Aït-Nouri provided the final chord in extra time.
Southampton 2-1 Lincoln City
Southampton got off to a false start against Lincoln City, number fourteen in League One. The young goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu was wrong with a corner kick and thus took the surprising 0-1. Che Adams then prevented an embarrassment for The Saints with two hits.
