Manchester United and Charlton Athletic have qualified for the quarter-finals of the League Cup. In the first game after the World Cup, The Red Devils won 2-0 against Championship leader Burnley. Meanwhile, Brighton lost to Charlton on penalty after a goalless contest.
Manchester United 2-0 Burnley
Both clubs entered the field with a Dutch left back: Tyrell Malacia was in the base at Manchester United and coach Vincent Kompany from Burnley set up Ian Maatsen. In addition to Malacia, Erik ten Hag also chose four other World Cup visitors, with Bruno Fernandes, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford.
After Alejandro Garnacho, face to face with goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell, missed a good chance, Eriksen opened the scoring. A long ball from Bruno Fernandes ended up with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who put the ball back to Eriksen with an outstretched leg. The Dane was able to finish from close range.
Burnley certainly did not leave his mark afterwards. It had two serious chances through Manuel Benson, after which Manchester United also got away well when goalkeeper Martin Dúbravka missed a cross. Casemiro barely cleared the ball off the line. Dúbravka, who had only played one cup game so far this season, stood out shortly afterwards with a wrong assumption that did not kill him either.
Anthony Martial failed to shoot Manchester United 2-0 on the other side. But Marcus Rashford did that in the second half after a nice solo action. A nice pass from ex-AZ player Jóhann Berg Gudmundsson enabled Darko Churlinov to make it 2-1, but he failed to do so. Ashley Barnes didn’t have the sights on twice either.
Antony came on as a substitute shortly after the 2-0 and was close to a goal. Seven minutes before the end after an individual action, but the margin remained two. An unnecessary blot on the win was a late yellow card for Bruno Fernandes. Who is suspended for the next round.
Charlton Athletic 0-0 (pen 4-3) Brighton & Hove Albion
No goals were scored in regular time, after which the game went directly to penalty kicks. The series eventually contained fourteen penalties, because both teams missed three of the five first penalties. In the end, a miss by Moisés Caicedo turned out to be fatal for Brighton. Which was still supported by 6300 fans who traveled along. Joël Veltman and Jan Paul van Hecke remained on the bench for the entire match. World champion Alexis Mac Allister was not there yet.
