Manchester United will change ownership in the long term. The English football superpower had been put up for sale. Friday at midnight was the last chance to make an offer. And that happened.
Bidding war at Old Trafford
The current owners, the Glazer Family, have not yet given a definite answer about the end result. However, according to the BBC, an all-out bidding war ensued on Friday. The British public medium reports that the club will generate a record amount. The highest bid would be over £5 billion. In comparison, Chelsea went for about half earlier this season.
One of the potential buyers is Jassim bin Hamad Al Thani. The sheikh from Qatar made a staggering offer just before the deadline. The BBC writes that the Qataris not only buy the club, but also have a huge budget to strengthen the selection. In addition, the stadium will be renovated and investments will be made in the area around Old Trafford.
The offer from Qatar will result in a huge profit for the Glazers. Nevertheless, it is not impossible that the current owners will settle for less. The American family is completely excluded from any further participation in the takeover of Sheikh Jassim and it is precisely this option that can still tempt the Glazers to accept another offer.
Glazers to keep a share of the club
That option also came just before the deadline expired. Sir Jim Ratcliffe also made a serious offer. However, he put a deal on the table, whereby the Glazers could keep a share of the shares. Ratcliffe would own most of the share package, but that way the Americans remain involved in the top club. And it was precisely that possibility that they would seriously consider.
Sheffield United seemingly saved from financial disaster
Incidentally, it was not only restless Friday night at Old Trafford. The future of a Premier League club was also being negotiated at Bramall Lane. Sheffield United were promoted last week, but also seem to be going under the hammer. Nigerian businessman Dozy Mmobuosi is said to have made an offer of £150 million. He seems to have a good chance with that.
