Though Manchester United secured the initial lead at Stamford Bridge, hosts Chelsea, who dominated 64% of ball possession, deservedly equalized. So, Stamford Bridge at Sunday night saw, in Premier League football news, Chelsea hold United to a 1-1 draw.
Carrick made a shock decision to omit Cristiano Ronaldo from the starting line-up. So, we saw Ronaldo, along with Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire dropping out from the starters.
On the other hand, Carrick did recall Eric Bailly, Nemanja Matic, Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes to start the match.
Premier League Football News – Chelsea Hold United to a 1-1 Draw
Chelsea came close to scoring as early as in just the fourth minute. Marcos Alonso threaded a ball through for Callum Hudson-Odoi.
Victor Lindelof came forward to try and make the challenge but let him through far too easily. Then, the Englishman opened up his body. He was trying to curl the ball into the far post from an angle on the left.
But David de Gea brilliantly saved the effort using only his legs.
Then, in the 18th minute, Alonso played in Hudson-Odoi down the left wing. And the latter came inside and fed Hakim Ziyech, whose first-time effort went over the crossbar.
In general, too, Hudson-Odoi was the best player on the park. Six minutes after his first effort, he delivered an inch-perfect cross into the box for Werner. But the German glanced his header wide and the brilliant assist came to nothing.
Antonio Rudiger came the closest any player had to breaking the deadlock on the half-hour mark. The Blues centre-back left the crossbar shaking after a firebolt from 30 yards.
Later too, De Gea had to be on his toes again exactly before half-time when Reece James shot a free-kick.
The ball, towards the back post, looked like it may be sneaking into the corner. But the Spaniard tipped it around the post.
Despite being largely second best, United took the initial lead in this match, against the run of play.
In the 53rd minute, Jorginho made a horrible error as he passed back straight to Jadon Sancho. And the latter was through on goal and slotted his strike past Edouard Mendy for the opening goal.
In the 58th minute, Werner should have equalised for Thomas Tuchel’s side. Alonso whipped a cross into the box that was deflected into the path of Werner six yards out. But the German could only flash his attempt wide of the target.
Chelsea found a way back into the game. They won a penalty in the 67th minute when Aaron Wan-Bissaka caught Thiago Silva with an outstretched leg.
Jorginho stepped up and slotted the penalty spot-kick into the bottom-left corner, thus making up for his earlier mistake.
Chelsea had a glorious chance to win the match 2-1 with the last action of the match.
Ziyech played a ball down the right-hand side for Mount, who chipped to the back post for an unmarked Rudiger.
Rudiger had the goal at his mercy but blazed his volley horribly over the bar and the match ended 1-1.
