Marco Reus commits his future to Borussia Dortmund. The 33-year-old attacker signed for a year on Thursday and is reportedly satisfied with a significant salary cut.
Reus signs a new contract and dreams of his first national title with Dortmund
Reus is no longer a regular starter in Edin Terzic’s team. That fueled the rumours of a possible departure. Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al-Nassr would be interested and in their own country there were noises about a possible switch to RB Leipzig. Those stories can go in the trash, because Reus has sealed his contract extension with BVB. The routine is now fixed until mid-2024.
Bild knows that Reus had to settle for a pay cut. According to the German newspaper, the club icon previously earned twelve million euros a year and will have to settle for a maximum of seven million euros next season. That was apparently no problem for Reus, who has been a supporter of Dortmund since childhood and is eager to win his first national title with the club.
On the way to the title
“I still have a great desire to commit myself to the club, where I spent more than half of my football life. For me there is nothing more beautiful than scoring goals for the best fans in the world,” Reus said. The attacker came to the Signal Iduna Park in the summer of 2012, just after Dortmund’s last championship and has not yet won a national title.
That is closer than ever this season, because with five games to go, Dortmund leads the dance in the Bundesliga. BVB is one point ahead of closest pursuer Bayern Munich.
Cup elimination leaves Cristiano Ronaldo extremely frustrated
Speaking of Al-Nassr, the cup elimination with the club came hard on Cristiano Ronaldo. Jean-David Beauguel shot Al-Wehda to the final and thought to strike up a conversation with the Portuguese afterwards, but it turned out differently than he had hoped.
Beauguel scored the only goal of the match. The 31-year-old striker sought contact with Ronaldo after the final whistle, but received no response. That disappointed Beauguel quite a bit, says the goalscorer in conversation with l’Équipe. Ronaldo seemed to find it difficult to accept that not Al-Nassr, but Al-Wehda will play the final against Al-Hilal.
“After the game I told him I’m a big fan of his and I asked for his shirt,” Beauguel recalls. “He shook my hand without really looking at me. With a contemptuous look. I understand that he was disappointed by his team’s loss, but that surprised me. On the field he was annoying and yelled at his teammates.”
Ronaldo’s frustration is somewhat understandable, as the Portuguese superstar does not appear to be winning a prize this season. Cup win is no longer possible and the national title is also a very difficult story after two games without victory.
