Manchester United’s title hopes seem to be getting more and more serious. Due to the resounding 3-0 win over Leicester City, The Red Devils approach rival Manchester City to three points.
Arsenal and Manchester City have been spilling points lately and so United are getting closer. On Sunday, the Ten Hag team won convincingly against Leicester without important forces such as Raphaël Varane, Christian Eriksen and Casemiro. The visitors started stronger and made it difficult for United in the first half. After the break, however, Ten Hag’s formation was many times stronger.
“Leicester are a great team, they made it very hard for us,” Ten Hag responded to the BBC afterwards. “But that was also because of us. We did not follow our game principles properly, then you will be punished. And we owe it to David de Gea that we didn’t concede a goal. We weren’t well disciplined, that’s not good,” said the manager.
“I told the team at half-time. In the second half it went better for all of us, Bruno Fernandes played a magnificent game. The team puts Marcus Rashford in the right positions, but Bruno in particular did a great job. If everyone follows our game principles, we can play very well. You saw that in the second half,” said Ten Hag.
Rashford says, “It’s still early in the season”
The Dutchman was then asked whether United will now interfere in the title race. “We’re not thinking about that right now,” Ten Hag replied. “We think about tomorrow. We have to become a better version of ourselves. That’s what we work for. We are only in February, we are not looking too far ahead,” Ten Hag assured.
Man in form Rashford spoke words to the same effect. “It’s still early in the season. We are fighting on many fronts and we have two hugely important games coming up this week,” he referred to next weekend’s return against Barcelona in the Europa League and next weekend’s League Cup final against Newcastle United.
And the title race? “We are very close now, but both teams above us are very strong and play good football. And we just have to focus on ourselves. We have to do the best we can and keep collecting the points,” Rashford said.
