According to English media, Wout Weghorst will leave Manchester United after six months, but the striker from Borne knows nothing about it. He believes the talks between him and the club’s management are going well.
Weghorst: “Manchester United is positive about me”
Manchester United rents Weghorst from Burnley, but would have seen enough already. “In the talks I have heard that the club is positive about me. There has been no communication that Manchester United no longer want me,” Weghorst told The Times. “They appreciate my input and believe I can be of value to the team. Of course I have heard different things in the media, but I do see what is happening and focus on our goals in the league and cup.”
Weghorst came into action remarkably often, especially in the beginning, in recent weeks he has regularly been on the bench and there has been a lot of criticism of his game. “I am someone who likes to play. So when you take action less, you realize what you’re missing. If the club wants to keep me, I need to know what role I have,” the striker added.
Weghorst (30) should normally return to Burnley after this season, where his contract runs until 2025. Burnley were relegated from the Premier League last year, but are back after one year.
Prominent analysts crack Weghorst and do not understand Ten Hag’s choice
Wout Weghorst has to pay for prominent English analysts after his performance for Manchester United against West Ham United. Rio Ferdinand does not understand why United manager Erik ten Hag allows the striker to show up as number 10.
Weghorst returned to the starting line-up at United against West Ham, where he had to settle for a role as a substitute since the beginning of April. The Orange-international was taken to the side after less than an hour by Ten Hag, who brought Anthony Martial in for Weghorst.
Former Mancunian Ferdinand thinks that Ten Hag’s choice for Weghorst on ’10’ will cause some crooked faces within United’s selection. “A ’10’ at United, in my view, should not be someone like Weghorst. With his characteristics,” said the BT Sport analyst.
“If I were Sancho, Fernandes, Garnacho or Martial, I would think that a number 10 at United is apparently being asked to do something very different than creating chances, playing between the lines and enabling other players to score goals. Weghorst’s best action against West Ham was a tackle in United’s half,” said Ferdinand.
Fellow analyst Peter Crouch also does not see the added value of Weghorst in his current role. “Wout is a good player, but I don’t understand why he plays in that position. When you set him up, you have to make sure he puts the balls back on Rashford and Sancho. Now you can’t get the best out of him” he commented.
Premier League Productions analyst Ian Wright notes that Weghorst’s starting spot also says a lot about Martial’s current situation: “With all due respect to Martial, if Weghorst is preferred to start, then you have a problem.”
