DP World Tour Champ: With a victory at the DP World Tour Championship, Tyrrell Hatton hopes to finish off an “average” year. He’s off to a good start thanks to a first-round score of 7 under par, which has him tied for the lead with U.S. Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick.
At the par-4 16th hole, the Englishman’s play was capped by a 64-foot birdie putt that went up and over a sharp ridge and into the cup.
Hatton made a joke about “hit-and-hope” following his round. “We weren’t really particularly committed to the line, to be honest. I kind of altered my mind at the last minute and started it a little more to the right, and you need a lot of luck to hole a putt from that distance down the tier. I did get lucky a couple of times today, and it was undoubtedly a welcome reprieve.
Four straight birdies, including the “great break” at the 16th, placed Hatton in position to potentially birdie the par-5 18th and enter the halfway house with a two-shot lead.
Hatton was disappointed that the par 5 didn’t go as planned.
Hatton pushed his tee shot into a fairway bunker up the left side of the final hole due to water lurking up the right. After that, he could only progress his second ball 34 yards into the left rough, which resulted in a bogey and frustrated one of the most ardent players in the game with an otherwise excellent day.
Shortly after completing his round, Hatton stated, “My head’s a bit fried right now. “At that point, my mind is just out of control. But that is how things are.
The six-time DP World Tour champion has given himself a chance to lift a trophy for the first time since winning the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship in January 2021, despite the poor result.
Hatton reached his highest career rating of No. 5 in the Official World Golf Ranking thanks to that victory.
Hatton, who is currently ranked No. 29 in the world, is prepared to put this season behind him.
In response to a question about his year, Hatton stated, “I would say consistently very, very ordinary.” In addition to that strong showing at Bay Hill (T-2), we were, at least temporarily, in the lead in the Desert Classic on Saturday afternoon.
