What will the calendar for the PGA Tour look like in 2024, and what does it mean for players at all levels? Rich Beem, a former major winner, examines the upcoming golf season and explains why the selected tournaments cannot be compared to the LIV Golf League schedule.
The PGA Tour schedule adjustments are intriguing, to say the least, and the direction they are taking is probably one they have been considering for a long time, long before LIV entered the discussion.
The PGA Tour is reportedly making more money and upgrades after Rory McIlroy told me at the Genesis Invitational last year that there would be some significant changes. Based on what we learned this week, I believe they are doing just that.
The PGA Tour will improve as a result of the modifications, aligning more closely with events like the Formula One schedule or the Premier League, where it is known where and when the greatest players will be competing against one another.
The only thing that will likely be eliminated is the likelihood that the same players will participate in these specified events often, but you will still have the chance to witness young, new faces make their way into these competitions.
Many people will likely believe it to be a two-tier tour, but that is how it has always been, so let’s not pretend otherwise! What we’re going to have now is essentially a clear way of identifying the tournaments that each and every professional golfer aspires to play in, as well as the route to get there.
The people who criticise it are hasty in their judgement and frequently don’t pause to consider what it means for the sport. There will be more limited-field events without a cut, which some people lament, but we’ve had such for years with the World Golf Championships, so it’s nothing new.
I can understand the criticism and claims that they are only making these changes in response to LIV, but it is simply incorrect to criticise them for “following suit” when the PGA Tour is merely trying to find the finest athletes in our sport.
