PGA Tour: Jon Rahm of Spain leads after the first round of the Arnold Palmer tournament on seven under par, followed by Kurt Kitayama, Chris Kirk, and Cameron Young of the United States on five under par; Aaron Rai of England is three strokes down of the leader on four under; Rory McIlroy had a poor two over opening round.
Rory Mcllroy started the Arnold Palmer Invitational with a poor two-over-par round, which put him nine strokes back of leader Jon Rahm.
Rahm of Spain is in first place with a score of seven under par, two strokes ahead of the American group of Kurt Kitayama, Chris Kirk, and Cameron Young.
Aaron Rai of England is level with seven players, including Jordan Spieth, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and Patrick Cantlay, and is three strokes off the lead at 4-under.
“I profited from the strong swings. I made a great start on hole number one off the tee. seized the opportunity with a wedge in my hand,” added Rahm.
“I can state that it simply doesn’t happen for the two shots on holes 2 and 17 to have a combined six feet in those two holes. I landed in a really precise location and made two really terrific shots.
“Colin [Morikawa] may have landed on the green by 10 feet more than I did on hole number two, and he was over the green. We took advantage of the extremely slim margins we were playing with today.
“It’s not like the transitions were shaky. It’s just not easy, but I thought I played a fairly solid round of golf. The fairways are becoming harder to hit as they become more solid. You’ll be cutting it out of the rough and holding on for dear life if you miss the fairway.
“Nonetheless, I did have a lot of decent looks for birdie even in the interim. I had a pretty strong round of golf today, making excellent use of the three or four missed opportunities, missed fairways, and missed greens.
“Except for 8, where, well, things are what they are. Yet, even if I didn’t make many birdies in between, the game of golf was enjoyable.”
