PGA Tour: All players in the PGA Tour’s membership will benefit from changes to the schedule for the upcoming season, according to commissioner Jay Monahan, who believes they will improve tournaments around the golfing calendar.
The PGA Tour revealed earlier this month that eight “designated events” with fields of 70–78 competitors, no cuts, and increased payouts and FedExCup points will be included in the 2024 schedule.
The best players in the world are likely to compete against one other more frequently, according to Monahan, who said that the changes would “transform and establish the future path” for the PGA Tour. However, some players have criticised the changes.
Monahan exclusively told Sky Sports, “We’ve hit a wonderful mix between preserving the same number of designated events, improving our entire season, and raising the competition bar out here for every single player on the PGA Tour.”
“It has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from the fans, and our advertisers are clearly thrilled with it. There will always be detractors whenever you make changes, and we are aware of that.
“If you recall where we were in the summer of last year, many people were confused about the planned events. We now have an astonishing and occasionally disorienting leaderboard with players having a chance to win practically every Saturday and Sunday.
“I’m most enthusiastic about the competitive nature of it, to be honest. The top players in the world want to play together more frequently and compete against one another, and each player has the capacity and opportunity to compete depending on their level of play.”
The top 50 players from the FedExCup standings from the previous year, should they wish to participate, as well as golfers who have paved their own path with their accomplishments in full-field events, will compete in the selected events.
“If I’m a fan of the PGA Tour, I know at the start of the year where the best players will be competing throughout the year, and I know that I’m seeing more of it than I’ve ever seen before,” Monahan said.
“It’s crucial to emphasise that the only criteria for competing in the specified events is performance, and to qualify, you had to rank among the top 50 players in the previous year or be the most popular player in the current one.
“The strength across the schedule, the storylines that develop, and the stars who will come forward will continue in some really amazing ways, so having these fields constrained in no way detracts from any of our events.”
