Golf News: Colin Montgomerie has some opinions about Tiger Woods.
Woods won’t win another PGA Tour competition, according to Montgomerie, who recently spoke on the UK’s The Bunkered Podcast. The 59-year-old Scot also asserted that Woods, 46, ought to have retired earlier this year after failing to make the Open Championship cut at St. Andrews.
“That was the time,” remarked Montgomerie, a major bridesmaid who finished fifth in five majors, including the 2005 Open at St. Andrews, when he lost to Woods by five shots. “Stand on that bridge and begin to wave, and then everyone asks, “So, is that it? ” It is, indeed. It would have been a lovely way to go. He was walking up there by himself with tears in his eyes as the stands were packed and all of the world’s TV cameras were on him. Obviously, you can’t beat that walk. I did it on my own. When the seats are packed, that stroll is unbeatable. That is a unique, unique venue, I tell ya. This is a theatre. When that moment came, Tiger should have said, “OK, I bow out.”
Why continue? Leave from the top. There are not many people who can accomplish it.
On the Old Course, Woods has triumphed in two of his 15 major championships; yet, this past July, he blasted 9 over par and missed the cut by nine shots. He participated in just three official Tour events this year, all of which were majors, as he battles recovery from a February 2021 automobile accident that left his right leg seriously damaged.
His right foot’s plantar fasciitis forced him to withdraw from the Hero World Challenge earlier this month, but he made a comeback to compete in the 12-hole match on Saturday alongside Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and Jordan Spieth, although while riding in a cart. At this week’s PNC Championship, where he and his son Charlie will compete for the third consecutive year, he will also utilise a cart.
In the Bahamas, Woods reaffirmed that he would never be able to play a full schedule again due to his surgically repaired leg and back problems. He stated that his goals for the upcoming season included winning the majors and perhaps one or two more major competitions.
Woods appears to have a tough road ahead of him if he wants to break the Tour career victories record-tying tie with Sam Snead based solely on opportunities. However, it doesn’t seem like that is the reason Montgomerie has Woods down for No. 83.
