Golf News: Bryson DeChambeau has pulled out of another PGA Tour event in his bid to achieve full fitness, with the American missing this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge in Texas.
DeChambeau has had an injury-plagued year, missing the cut at The Masters in mid-April and requiring wrist surgery days after the major at Augusta National.
The 2020 US Open winner, who has dropped to No. 25 in the global rankings, thinks he is “getting there,” but still lacks the “endurance” to compete for four days.
DeChambeau considered competing in last week’s PGA Championship, which compatriot Justin Thomas won for the second time, but decided against it following a practise round at Southern Hills in Oklahoma.
The 28-year-old was out for nearly two months earlier in the season due to hip and wrist issues before returning in late March and losing all three of his matches at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play before missing the weekend at the Valero Texas Open and The Masters.
DeChambeau replied to Golfweek in a text message: “I’m getting close, but I don’t have the stamina for four days yet. Making progress. I’m taking my time to make sure it’s completely healed.”
PGA champion Thomas will compete in the Charles Schwab Challenge, which you can watch live on Sky Sports Golf starting at 1.15 p.m. on Thursday.
Will Zalatoris, who lost in a play-off against Thomas last week at Southern Hills, is in the field, as are world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, Colleen Morikawa, Viktor Hovland, Jordan Spieth, and Sam Burns.
In 2021, defending winner Jason Kokrak defeated fellow American Jordan Spieth by two shots to win the title.
