Golf News: The final events receiving enhanced status for the upcoming season will be made public by the PGA Tour.
The four tournaments, which will be revealed later this week, are the Waste Management Phoenix Open, RBC Heritage, Wells Fargo Championship, and Travelers Championship, according to a report from Golfweek. The Genesis Invitational, Arnold Palmer Invitational, Memorial Tournament, WGC-Dell Match Play, and Sentry Tournament of Champions will all have purses of $20 million in 2023 (TOC, at $15 million, is the exception), and they will all be mandatory starts for the top 20 players in the Tour’s $100 million Player Impact Program. These events will join the three FedExCup Playoffs events.
The Tour unveiled significant modifications back in August in an effort to keep its top players from defecting to the LIV Golf circuit, which is supported by Saudi Arabia. The requirement that these elite players compete in 20 tournaments (if eligible), including the four majors, the Players Championship, 12 elevated events, and three more tournaments of their discretion, was one of these modifications.
These four high additions will guarantee that the Tour’s finest meet a minimum of 17 times and at least twice each month from February to June, including three times each in March and June, in accordance with the new PIP rules.
At the CJ Cup on Tuesday, Jon Rahm remarked, “Well, until I have an official word from the PGA Tour, I won’t be able to 100% believe that. “Now, that might be accurate. If so, we’ll take care of it. It is what it is, after all.”
Rahm was also informed that two of the additions for next year, the RBC Heritage and Travelers, each come one week following a major on the calendar. Rahm has been rather outspoken about the 20-event limit since the Tour announced it. Although the Travelers, played in Cromwell, Connecticut, will come right after the U.S. Open in Los Angeles, the Heritage, which follows the Masters, may just be a short drive from Augusta National.
Jordan Spieth was reminded that the PGA Championship, Memorial, and both Dallas-area tournaments he usually competes in, the AT&T Byron Nelson and Charles Schwab Challenge, begin a five-week stretch that also includes the Wells Fargo.
