After a week of poor scoring at the Travelers Championship, Rory McIlroy feels TPC River Highlands may become “obsolete” in the modern game.
McIlroy shot a final-round 64 in Connecticut to tie for seventh place on 18 under, five shots behind winner Keegan Bradley.
During the current PGA Tour elevated tournament, the par-70 layout produced eight rounds of 62 or below, with McIlroy, acknowledging that soft conditions made for easier scoring circumstances.
“I don’t particularly enjoy it when a tournament is like this,” McIlroy remarked. “Unfortunately, technology has passed this course by, don’t you think? It’s kind of rendered it outdated, especially with the amount of rain we’ve had.
“You can grow the rough up and hope for firm conditions, so it gets tricky. I don’t believe that increasing the rough and making the fairways tight is the pattern for a truly great golf course. This groups everyone together.
“The plan is similar to that of Los Angeles Country Club, where you have wide targets but penalties if you miss. This is not your average golf course. It’s not that kind of agreement. It does not have the required land.
“Unfortunately, when you have soft conditions like this and the best players in the world, this is what happens.”
McIlroy’s performance in Connecticut
McIlroy birdied the second from close range and followed up back-to-back wins from the fourth by two-putting from 30 feet to take advantage of the par-five sixth.
The world number three converted from six feet at the seventh to reach five under for the round, then bogeyed the ninth after a wayward drive forced him to take a drop.
McIlroy made a six-foot birdie at the 11th but missed a similar opportunity at the next, then picked up a stroke at the par-five 13th before finishing with a run of five straight pars.
“I got off to a hot start, which was nice and felt like what I needed,” said McIlroy. “I then hit a drive on nine that I thought wasn’t too bad. I got close to the boundary fence and made a bogey there, slowing my progress.”
