Golf News: Tiger Woods has echoed Rory McIlroy’s plea for Greg Norman to step down as CEO of LIV Golf in order to facilitate the negotiation of a settlement to the golf industry’s civil war.
In their fight against the Saudi-funded breakaway circuit, McIlroy and Woods have been the two largest advocates of the traditional tours. However, McIlroy has advocated for an agreement to be struck between the opposing groups.
The world’s top player believes that will be difficult if Norman continues to lead LIV Golf, and 15-time major winner Woods made it clear that he shares that opinion.
“You need to bring the two bodies together, but how do you deal with one side that is so hostile and trying to sabotage our tour?”
Since the organisations in charge of The Masters, PGA Championship, US Open, and The Open have not yet provided confirmation, it is currently unknown whether LIV members will be permitted to participate in the major tournaments in 2023.
The likes of Cameron Smith, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, and Phil Mickelson have exemptions to participate in majors, but many other LIV players may find it difficult to qualify because the new tour does not offer them enough Official Golf World Ranking points.
Woods went on: “There is a window of time for us from both tours to figure this out, but I believe that window is closing simply because the majors are approaching and they will have their own requirements; however, this is related to LIV and their lawsuit.
“They sued us first, and we responded by suing them. They must change their leadership, and once they do, we will follow suit and remove ourselves from the discussion.
If that doesn’t happen, I believe it will keep moving in the direction it is now.
Woods insisted that the PGA Tour’s prestige should continue to draw players despite repeatedly acknowledging that it cannot compete financially with LIV.
