Golf News: Next month, Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas will face off against Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods in a unique charity competition.
The Match, a 12-hole floodlit event that benefits Hurricane Ian relief efforts, will hold its most recent iteration on December 10 at Pelican Golf Club in Florida.
Woods participated in The Match’s first two events, losing to Phil Mickelson in the opening round in 2018 before joining up with NFL great Peyton Manning to upset Mickelson and Tom Brady in 2020.
Woods tweeted that he was looking forward to competing in Capital One’s: The Match with Rory McIlroy versus Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth to support Hurricane Ian relief. On December 10th, I’ll see you guys outside under the stars.
The eighth iteration of the competition—the second of the year—takes place this year, after Brady and Aaron Rodgers defeated Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes in June. McIlroy, Thomas, and Spieth all make their competition debuts this year.
Since sustaining potentially fatal leg and ankle injuries in a vehicle accident in February of last year, Woods has only participated in a small number of tournaments, with all three of his official appearances coming in this year’s majors.
The 150th Open at St. Andrews in July was Woods’ last competitive appearance before The Match, which is a part of what might be a busy December for the 15-time major champion.
Woods is scheduled to compete once more – alongside his son Charlie – at the PNC Championship. The former world No. 1 is also hosting the Hero World Challenge the preceding week in the Bahamas, where he might potentially feature as one of three tournament exemptions.
When might Woods make a comeback to the PGA Tour?
When asked about his future plans, Woods told reporters after missing the cut at The Open that he had “nothing scheduled” and that he might not play again until “sometime next year,” however caddie Joe LaCava anticipates him to play again sooner.
LaCava said on the Dan Patrick Show earlier in the summer, “I’m hopeful that he will play maybe in December at the Hero [World Challenge] and the Father-Son [PNC Championship] and maybe the Genesis [Invitational].” I continue to hope that he will compete in three or four tournaments before the Masters.
Wayne Riley of Sky Sports predicts that Tiger Woods will compete in at least one PGA Tour event before he travels to Augusta National, although he cautions that it might not be until 2023.
