Golf News: JT Poston will make his Open debut later this month at St Andrew’s after winning the PGA Tour’s John Deere Classic by a single stroke.
Poston never relinquished his lead on the final day at TPC Deere Run, shooting a two-under 69 to finish the week on 21 under par and capture his second PGA Tour title.
Christiaan Bezuidenhout and Emiliano Grillo tied for second, three strokes back, with the top three all securing spots in the year’s final men’s major via the Open Qualifying Series.
“I’ve always wanted to play in one of those at any of the venues, but for my first one to be at St Andrews and for the 150th – I can’t wait there and can’t wait to see what it’s like!” Poston said.
Poston entered the final day with a three-shot lead and extended it when he followed back-to-back birdies on his first two holes with a 25-footer from the fringe on the par-four fourth.
The American made a three-putt bogey at the fifth, missing from four feet, and failed to get up and down from a greenside bunker to save par at the next, but holed from six feet at the seventh to avoid a third straight dropped shot.
Poston broke a run of ten consecutive pars with a six-foot birdie at the par-five 17th, putting him three clear, with a two-putt par at the 18th completing his first PGA Tour victory since the 2019 Wyndham Championship.
Bezuidenhout birdied three of his final five holes to finish with a bogey-free 66 and a first-year PGA Tour top-10, while Grillo mixed four birdies with two bogeys on the final day to finish on 18 under and tied-second.
Despite shooting a five-under 66 with three consecutive birdies, Christopher Gotterup finished a spot outside The Open spots in a tie for fourth, with Scott Stallings also one spot short after missing a seven-foot birdie opportunity on his penultimate hole.
Callum Tarren of England finished tied-sixth after a one-under 70, while Matthias Schwab dropped down the leaderboard with a final-round 72.
