Golf News: Tiger Woods says his 2022 was “difficult,” but it was also “one of the more gratifying years I’ve had.” He now plans to concentrate on his injury healing in preparation for a potentially more active 2023.
The 15-time major winner Woods, who was seriously injured in a vehicle accident in February 2021, returned to the golf course for this year’s Masters, PGA Championship, and The Open despite only playing nine competitive rounds all season.
His most recent rounds were in The Match, a practise round when he and Rory McIlroy were defeated by Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas, and over the weekend in the PNC Championship alongside his son Charlie, 13 years old.
In Orlando, Florida, the Woods duo tied for seventh place, with Tiger – who is still having trouble walking – being permitted to use a cart.
On Sunday night as he looked back on the year, he continued to believe that he had made “a lot” of progress.
Woods, who will turn 47 later this month, said: “The first year, I had back surgery and last year, I played with a broken leg.” Since nothing was broken this year, it is a good thing that everything is once again in its proper place.
“The plantar fasciitis [heel discomfort] is no fun,” Woods continued, “but now I get to really recover, heal, and advance on this because there are so many nice things I’ve been able to do physically, be able to smash the golf ball, practise, and do everything in a standstill.
We’ll undoubtedly work on this, but I haven’t been able to get from point A to point B.
The Open at St. Andrews in July, Woods’ final round before competing in The Match in December, was heralded as his career high point for 2022.
He said, “It was a challenging year, but it was also one of the most satisfying years I’ve had in a while.”
“I’ve experienced a lot of setbacks recently, so being able to play St. Andrews in a British Open perhaps for the last time at this level was really significant to me. As I hinted earlier this summer, I don’t know if I ever get to do that again.
“That was my favourite golf course in the entire world, and if that was all, I don’t know whether I could have ended my career there.
