DP World Tour Championship: Rory McIlroy, the current world No. 1, is aiming for more success in Dubai as he seeks to cap up a remarkable 2022 with a DP World Tour Championship triumph.
The Northern Irishman, who has previously triumphed twice on the Earth Course and maintains a slim 128.1-point lead over Ryan Fox in the season-long DP World Tour Rankings, has had success at Jumeirah Golf Estates.
Having led the season-long rankings in 2012, 2014, and 2015, McIlroy is in the lead in the battle to capture the Harry Vardon Trophy for the fourth time. The four-time major champion is aiming to build on a strong run of results and win a fourth global championship of the year.
In his pre-tournament news conference, McIlroy stated, “I’ve had some success here and I’ve generally had some wonderful experiences in Dubai. “Between this competition and the Desert Classic, I have won four times. Coming back here with a chance to take home the season title is a good feeling.
“It has been a while [since a win in Dubai], but thanks to my steady play this year, as well as obviously in the majors and some of the bigger tournaments, I find myself in a good spot. It’s nice to enter with two things on the line rather than just one. I can’t wait to start.
“It would be a very pleasant way to end the year. My season’s last event is this one. In a few weeks, I believe some of the other guys will compete in Tiger’s tournament in the Bahamas. I believe that I have been very consistent in my play throughout the year, especially in the last six or seven months after the Masters.”
Who still has a shot at McIlroy?
Fox, who most recently finished second at the Nedbank Golf Challenge last week, is second in the standings heading into this week. US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick is third as he seeks a third DP World Tour Championship triumph.
I adore this town, Fitzpatrick declared. From a performance perspective compared to every other golf course I’ve ever played on tour, it’s the best course I play all year.
“I’m glad to be back here. I have a lot of happy memories from here, and I always feel confident knowing that I can win because I’ve won twice, so this is a place I enjoy visiting.
After ending his three-year winless streak with a successful title defence in Sun City on Sunday, Tommy Fleetwood is one of six men who enter the week still with a mathematical chance of passing McIlroy in the standings.
