Golf Calendar: The second-ranked golfer in the world, Jon Rahm, says a match-play tournament makes golf “far more accessible to every other sport” and hopes it stays on the PGA Tour schedule.
The 64-player WCG-Dell Technologies Match Play, which takes place this week in Texas and features Rahm alongside Rickie Fowler, Billy Horschel, and Keith Mitchell, is the final one before the competition is discontinued.
The first three days of the tournament feature one-on-one competition among players in a round-robin format. The champions of the 16 groups advance to the weekend’s knockout phases, which include the final on Sunday afternoon.
Rahm said: “I’m eager. I enjoy playing matches. It’s unfortunate that this tournament’s current iteration is its final one. I’m hoping it’s only a one-year agreement so we can get a match-play competition back on the calendar.
With the possible exception of the Ryder Cup, you are essentially only competing against the guy in front of you at that time of the year.
“It is far more in line with every sport we participate in, which is essentially about outperforming the team in front.
Rahm: I’m not sure what the answer is.
“I’m certain a solution exists. While I believe we should have a match-play event every single season, I’m sure there is a way around it.
“I don’t know how to make it intriguing enough to last all day Sunday or all weekend, to put it simply.
“You can frequently lose your first two matches while playing excellent golf, have no chance of qualifying, yet still be required to play on Friday; failing to do so could have an impact on the group.
“There are a variety of reasons why someone could not enjoy it. I just like playing matches. It’s a different way of doing things, and I think it’s incredibly entertaining whether you win or lose.”
