LIV Golf Players: Winning is what Matt Fitzpatrick prioritises above all else.
After losing to the United States 19-9 in 2021, Team Europe will attempt to avenge that defeat at the Ryder Cup in Rome in 2023. The reigning U.S. Open champion is prepared to throw all of that aside for a better shot at winning despite the fact that LIV Golf has shattered many ties in the golf community. If doing so requires forming alliances with several LIV players, then be it.
According to Fitzpatrick, “I think there are clearly a few personal relationships that have been affected by this.” I don’t care; all I want is to win, and I’m sure those boys share my desire.
Sergio Garcia, the all-time highest scorer in Europe, was singled out by Fitzpatrick.
“For me personally, Sergio would be the one to stick out, Fitzpatrick remarked. “The specifics of [his friendship with Rory McIlroy] are unknown to me. If that’s the case, I’m happy to share a room with him and can section him off for the rest of the group.”
Along with Garcia, many other European Ryder Cup veterans have joined LIV, including Ian Poulter, Lee Westwood, Graeme McDowell, and Henrik Stenson, who was originally chosen to lead the 2023 European team but lost that position in July owing to his defection.
Luke Donald, who took over as captain after Stenson left, will have some difficult decisions in around nine months. The American team will not be choosing LIV players.
McIlroy doesn’t want to play with people who have left to go to LIV.
In September, he declared, “I don’t think any of those guys should be on the Ryder Cup team.”
Fitzpatrick, however, agrees with Spanish musician Jon Rahm.
Rahm stated to The Telegraph in October, “The Ryder Cup is not the PGA Tour and European Tour against LIV – it is Europe versus the US, period.” “The Ryder Cup is the ultimate competition between the elite of each sport. It doesn’t look good, but I hope they could play.”
Although Fitzpatrick has no bad feelings for the LIV defectors, he doesn’t want them to keep their pledge.
The Englishman answered, “I don’t have a problem as long as you go and don’t come back. Go ahead and take the money and play anywhere you want; I couldn’t care less. Just don’t return and take other players’ positions.
“I am aware that players like Westy, Poulter, and Sergio have played extensively in Europe throughout the years and have contributed in their own ways, and they have. They have done far more for the European Tour than I have, so I can never criticise them for it.”
