PGA Tour: Danny Willett missed a shot and finished Saturday’s Fortinet Championship in California tied for second.
He had a share of the lead at the halfway point thanks to his bogey-free 64 in the second round, which was his second consecutive flawless day.
But on the third day of the opening tournament of the 2022–23 PGA Tour season, he recorded a bogey and a double-bogey.
Willett, the winner of the 2016 Masters, finished with a total score of 204. He was joined by American Max Homa, who shot a score of 12 under par.
“It was tough when we started the day, it was really windy,” Willett said.
“It’s hard trying to hold some of them front flags when it’s pumping downwind when the areas really small, but yes, some scrappy golf.”
Homa, the reigning champion, recorded two bogeys on the day as well.
Justin Lower, an American, finished first overall with a round of 69 and five birdies.
“I just tried to really keep it as simple as I could, keep it in play, keep it in the fairway because I really think you can score from the fairway,” Lower said. “It’s very tough to score from the rough, especially with the pins tucked the way they are.
In his 29th PGA Tour outing, Lower took his first-ever 54-hole lead at Silverado Resort & Spa.
“I’m sure I’ll be nervous, for sure, but [it’s] just part of it,” he added.
