PNC Championship: The leaders, Justin Thomas and his father Mike were in the final group of the PNC Championship on Sunday, barely two shots ahead of Tiger Woods and his son Charlie.
On the last green, neither team had a chance to win.
To win the tournament at 24 under, Vijay Singh and his son Qass shot a second consecutive 59, two strokes better than the team of reigning champions John Daly and John Daly II (59), as well as Team Thomas (63). Team Woods (65) finished in a tie for ninth place, six back.
Tiger stated, “Charlie and I played really well yesterday. “We both looked like walking penguins outside today. All was well, though.”
Tiger and Charlie only carded seven birdies and an eagle in the scramble format, along with bogeying holes Nos. 7 and 17, the day after shooting their own 59.
Tiger made a 5-footer to open the scoring, but Charlie and he both missed chances for a 4-foot birdie at the next hole. However, Team Woods scored their eagle at No. 5 for the second round in a row as Tiger struck the green in two from around 200 yards out and Charlie rolled in the 12-footer to record a birdie at the par-5 third.
Tiger and Charlie didn’t play better than par again until the back nine, which they opened with a birdie after Tiger pitched from 40 yards to 8 feet and Charlie made the putt at No. 10. This effectively eliminated them from contention.
Charlie woods made another birdie putt, this time from 15 feet, two holes later.
The par-4 13th hole was where Tiger almost turned his pitch back into the hole for eagle, making it arguably the coolest shot of the day.
Tiger remarked, “That was sassy,” immediately following the shot that resulted in a tap-in birdie.
A birdie-bogey-birdie finish was the way Team Woods finished their last round. Charlie polished his shot while Tiger jammed his tee ball at the par-3 sixteenth. They each made a three-putt on the last green. And Charlie finishes up his third PNC appearance with a two-putt birdie at the last hole.
