PNC Championship: Tiger Woods and his son Charlie combined to finish the first round of the PNC Championship in Florida within two strokes of the lead.
In the scramble format at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, where each team chooses the best shot and plays from there until the ball is holed, the pair recorded an eagle and 11 birdies during their opening round 59.
Team Singh and Team Woods are tied for second place as Justin Thomas and his father Mike set the tone with an outstanding 15-under 57. Team Woods is attempting to improve on their second-place showing from the previous year.
Woods had to settle for a par at the opening hole and then missed a chance to birdie the par-five third after making a close-range shot. However, after making a 25-foot birdie at the fourth hole, the former world No. 1 chipped in for an eagle from off the fifth green.
Woods holed a 30-footer at the ninth to finish the front nine in 28 and move into a tie for the lead. He had previously walked in an eight-foot birdie at the sixth and watched his son pick up a stroke at the next.
The 15-time major champion helped his son make a close-range birdie at the 10th hole and was thrilled by Charlie’s 10-foot birdie at the 11th. After scrambling par at the following par three holes, Team Woods made birdies on their following two holes.
A birdie on the last hole sent the duo to 13 under, joining Team Singh, who had also birdied seven of their previous eight holes. Bernhard Langer and his son were then in fourth place ahead of a sizable group that was tied for fifth on 11 under.
Only winners of a major or The Players are permitted to compete alongside a family member in the 36-hole event, and Team Thomas produced two eagles and 11 birdies to set the halfway pace.
We had a great time defeating it today. We pursued it all day long, and while we didn’t get off to the best of starts, we eventually picked up the pace and really got into it, which was terrific, according to Tiger Woods.
“And to be able to enjoy that with Charlie, you know, with the Thomas family as a whole, and with the LaCavas (caddie), as it was again just a fantastic day,” Woods continued.
