PGA Tour: Three golfers have been announced as finalists for the PGA Tour’s Player of the Year award: world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler, FedExCup champion Rory McIlroy, and Champion Golfer of the Year Cameron Smith.
Despite joining LIV Golf at the conclusion of the 2021–22 season and therefore ineligible to compete on the PGA Tour the following year, Smith is still on the shortlist.
The Australian was a three-time champion in 2022, winning the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January with the lowest 72-hole total in PGA Tour history and narrowly winning The Players at TPC Sawgrass.
One of seven top-10 finishes during the season, The 150th Open at St. Andrews gave Smith his first major championship. Smith finished the year 20th in the FedExCup standings before switching to the Saudi-sponsored breakaway circuit.
Following victories at the WM Phoenix Open, Arnold Palmer Invitational, and WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, Scheffler won four times in six starts early in the year to catapult him to world No. 1. He then won his first major championship at The Masters.
The American added four second-place results to his resume, including one at the Tour Championship, when Rory McIlroy overcame a six-stroke deficit in the last round to win the FedExCup for the first time ever.
The PGA Tour Player Directors and members of the Player Advisory Council (PAC) narrowed down the field before PGA Tour members cast their votes for the 2019 Jack Nicklaus Award winner through September 9.
Additionally, a three-man shortlist for the Rookie of the Year was revealed, with Cameron Young, Sahith Theegala, and Joohyung (Tom) Kim all vying for the Arnold Palmer Award.
With his victory at the Wyndham Championship last month, Kim became the youngest PGA Tour winner since Jordan Spieth, and despite only obtaining Special Temporary Membership the month before, he managed to secure a spot in the FedExCup Playoffs.
Theegala registered five top-10 finishes and qualified for the season-ending Tour Championship in his first season, while Young finished fifth five times, including at The Open.
