2022 DP World Tour: The winner of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St. Andrews was Ryan Fox, who edged out Alex Noren of Sweden and Callum Shinkwin of England by one stroke. Rory McIlroy, who made a late surge, came in two shots back.
Fox entered the day at 11 under par and was pursuing Richard Mansell, who had increased his lead on Saturday from two strokes to four.
On Sunday, he recorded seven birdies and three bogeys, putting him at 15 under par for the tournament.
His previous victory on the European/DP World Tour came in February when he won the Ras Al Khaimah Classic in the United Arab Emirates.
His father Grant, who led the All Blacks to victory in the 1987 Rugby World Cup, cheered on the New Zealander at St Andrews.
Fox made birdies on the third, fifth, and seventh holes to seize the lead after just seven holes.
With three holes remaining, he increased his lead to three strokes with a combination of strong approach play and skill on the greens. Despite a last-minute scare on the 17th, Fox was able to reduce the damage to a bogey before successfully paring the 18th to claim the victory.
Fox, who together with Shane Warne had placed second in the team competition at this tournament last year, said: “It is significant. To be really honest, Warne is the only person I can currently think of.
“He was a fantastic friend and meant a lot to me and this occasion. It is a big loss that he is absent. I’m looking forward to sharing this occasion with my family.”
When questioned if Warne’s presence kept him from staying on course, Fox added: “Yes, there was undoubtedly some luck involved.
“I was obviously rather nervous during the final three holes. To be completely honest, my shots on the 16th, 17th, and 18th weren’t very nice. He was undoubtedly assisting.”
Mcllroy, a three-time Alfred Dunhill Links runner-up, finished in a tie for fourth place with Antoine Rozner on 13-under even though he shot one of the day’s best rounds.
Mcllroy finished the day six under par, which was the best score of the day, but it wasn’t enough to overtake the Fox.
On a score of 37 below par, Shinkwin and Alex Acquavella took home the team title by three strokes.
The Acciona Open de Espana, which begins on October 6 and features Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose as expected starters, is the next stop on the DP Tour.
