44-year-old Tiger Woods has come out stating that there is no reason why he cannot win the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio this week. Tiger will be competing in his first competitive tournament since February and will be looking for his record-breaking 83rd PGA tour victory. The previous record of 82 was ser by Sam Snead in 1965
“I would like to say that I’m going to win the event,” said Woods, who has won the tournament on 5 separate occasions. “That’s my intent coming in, that’s my intent going into every event,” he added.
TIger who tied the record By winning the Zozo Championship in Japan last October added “There’s no reason why I can’t do it again this week. Whether that plays outcome Sunday, hopefully, that will be the case.”
Woods missed out on tournaments prior to the lockdown with back issues. In his last event, The Genesis’ Invitational this February he finished last amongst those players that made the cut. Woods played in a charity event during the lockdown but decided not to play any closed-door competitive events.
I just felt it was better to stay at home and be safe,” said the American. “I’m used to playing with lots of people around me and that puts not only myself in danger but my friends and family. That’s something that I looked at and said, ‘I’m really not quite comfortable with that whole idea, let’s see how it plays out first’.”
Woods added that he was intrigued by how golf without spectators would feel and said he took to watching on television what the recent future for golf would be like. “To have no one yelling, no one screaming, no energy, the social distancing, no handshakes, there’s nothing to feed off of energy-wise,” said Woods.
