PGA Tour Return: This week at the Genesis Invitational, Tiger Woods makes his much-anticipated return to the PGA Tour competition. The 15-time major champion’s most recent comeback is eagerly anticipated by the athletic globe.
Since the Zozo Championship in October 2020, Woods’ appearance at Riviera Country Club will be his first non-major start on the PGA Tour. The 47-year-old is part of a star-studded field that includes 23 of the top 25 players in the world as well as every player currently ranked in the top 30 on the FedExCup standings.
14 months after a career-threatening automobile accident, the five-time Masters champion made his comeback from leg and ankle injuries at Augusta National last April. Woods then competed in the PGA Championship the following month before failing to make the cut at The 150th Open in July.
Although he competed using a cart at The Match and the PNC Championship in December, where he teamed with son Charlie, Woods hasn’t made an official start since the early exit at St Andrews, where he was compelled to refute rumours about any potential retirement from the sport.
Woods dropped to No. 1,294 in the world due to his infrequent playing schedule in recent years, and it’s unclear what to anticipate from the 82-time PGA Tour champion when he takes the course on Thursday.
How well is Woods doing?
Woods was scheduled to participate in the Hero World Challenge in December, but the event’s host withdrew the week before the competition because of plantar fasciitis in his right foot.
Woods was less certain of his 2023 plan because of the inflammation, saying he could practise but couldn’t walk before the PNC Championship in December before adding that he should have been letting his foot recover.
Despite having previously said that he would only participate in competitions if he felt like he could “perform at the highest level,” Woods has not provided any updates on the status of his injuries. World No. 3 Rahm is among those who are happy to see Woods back in action.
Rahm praised Woods’ performance at the Genesis Invitational on Friday, saying, “Great to hear.” It is amazing that he keeps trying after what he has been through. I had a lot of sympathy for him because of everything that was going on with his leg and the plantar fasciitis that he also suffered.
“I’m sure he’ll keep working hard to try to win more competitions and perhaps score that 83rd victory. We are all truly honoured by it. The tournament is improved whenever Tiger is on the golf course competing. Therefore, I’m hoping that he can play successfully and in comfort.”
