Due to the immunisation requirements to enter the United States, Novak Djokovic was unable to participate in the US Open in 2022. He also missed the Australian Open in 2022 before winning it in 2023.
Following the announcement by the US that it is lifting its vaccination requirement for travellers from other countries, Novak Djokovic will be permitted to compete at the US Open this year.
The world No. 1 has already been prohibited from entering America and is not protected against Covid-19.
However, on May 12, US policy will change, enabling the 22-time Grand Slam champion to visit Flushing Meadows once more in August.
“Today, we are announcing that the administration will end the Covid-19 vaccination requirements for federal employees, federal contractors, and international air travellers at the end of the day on May 11, the same day that the Covid-19 public health emergency ends,” read a statement from the White House.
Due to his lack of vaccinations, Djokovic was unable to compete in the 2022 Australian Open and US Open events.
The Serb had requested a special exemption to compete in the US last month at the Miami Open and the BNP Paribas Open at Indian Wells, but he was not granted it.
Djokovic participated in this year’s Australian Open in January and won his most recent major singles championship since entry into Australia is no longer conditional upon receiving a Covid-19 immunisation.
The three times that Djokovic won the U.S. Open were in 2011, 2015, and 2018.
Djokovic declared he would skip Grand Slams rather than have a COVID shot. Last year, Djokovic missed the Australian Open and was deported from the country owing to his vaccination status.
Djokovic has won three of his 22 major championships. This year’s Hardcourt Grand Slam will take place from August 28 through September 10.
