US Open: At the Slovenia Open in Portoroz on Monday, Emma Raducanu defeated Dayana Yastremska to win her first match since the US Open.
The defending champion Raducanu had great expectations for the US Open this year but was disappointed to leave the tournament so quickly.
She chose to enter the competition as a wild card, and the Slovenian 19-year-old overcame Yastremska of Ukraine to win her maiden match.
Before being forced to withdraw, Raducanu won the first set 6-2 and was up 5-3 in the second.
Yastremska was forced to leave after aggravating a wrist condition she already had.
Yastremska, who retired two points from defeat, was buried by Raducanu, who had fended off all but one of her four break points on her serve.
Raducanu was happy to have won this match, her first since losing to Alize Cornet in the first round of the US Open when defending her championship.
“It has been really nice to be here. I came here early and it is a great place to have a tournament,” she said afterwards.
“Nobody wants to win by retirement. She is a ferocious competitor. I fought hard to stay in the points. I am happy to be in the next round.”
Despite being ranked 83 in this week’s new world rankings as a result of her disappointing US Open campaign, Raducanu isn’t worried about it and has stated that she enjoyed the “clean slate” it gave her in her quest to rise back to the top of the sport.
