Madrid Open: Due to a right-hand injury, Emma Raducanu withdrew from the Madrid Open hours before her first-round match.
Because of her withdrawal, the British No. 1 and 2021 US Open winner will no longer be ranked among the top 100 WTA players following the competition.
In preparation for the French Open, which begins on May 28 and runs for just over a month, Raducanu was scheduled to face Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in the opening round of her second clay-court competition.
The 20-year-old lost to Jelena Ostapenko in one-sided straight sets last week in the opening round of the Stuttgart Open. The Latvian won 6-2, 6-1 in just over an hour.
After losing to Bianca Andreescu in the opening round of the Miami Open at the end of March, it was Raducanu’s fifth defeat of 2023.
Raducanu had stated after her loss against Andreescu that she would seek new guidance on how to address the wrist issues that have hindered her this season.
She said, “It’s something I’ve been managing for a while. After this tournament, all I really need to do is reflect and determine what I should do next. I can play now, but the present options aren’t particularly practical in the long run.”
“I feel like this year has been challenging in that I’ve been managing a few existing injuries, and that’s been annoying and frustrating because I’ve been working as hard as I can.”
In order to have the greatest possible preparation for the clay-court season, Raducanu declared herself “unavailable” for Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup match against France in April.
Following the competition, British No. 1 Emma Raducanu, 20, who was scheduled to face Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova in the opening round of the Madrid Open on Wednesday, would no longer be ranked among the top 100 players in the WTA.
