Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli thinks that despite a number of sponsorship deals, former US Open winner Emma Raducanu has “not lacked focus” and advises her not to “rush the process” in her recovery from surgery.
Following surgery on her wrists and ankle, Raducanu is temporarily sidelined and taking a break before beginning the arduous process of rehabilitation.
The British player has already been disqualified from the French Open and Wimbledon, and the 20-year-old, who is most known for winning at Flushing Meadows in 2021, may find the US Open to be too soon.
Bartoli, who won the Wimbledon championship in 2013, anticipates Raducanu to prioritise maintaining his health in the near future.
“She has to prioritise her health first,” according to Bartoli, who also advanced to the French Open semifinals in 2011. “She needs to focus on staying healthy because if you look at her last 18 months since winning the US Open title, the amount of injuries she has carried is enormous,” Bartoli said. She hasn’t been able to play an entirely full schedule.
“The body just doesn’t follow, so she’s had to pull out of tournaments or matches. I think she needs to find someone on her side who can get her body in shape to last through a whole WTA season.
“A season is tremendously physically demanding, but skill will always be present, so it’s not a talent issue. It’s about getting every piece of the puzzle in place so that she can perform at her peak level each time she gets onto the court, which regrettably hasn’t happened thus far.
“She could virtually have to start from scratch, but I’m confident she can handle it and is prepared for it. However, she has to assemble a group of people who support her and want to see her return to the top 10.
“You can’t just rush the process,” the coach said. “It takes time to build the body and time to get to your fitness level at the level required after being on the sidelines for a few months.”
