French Open: In the next few days, Andy Murray and his staff will decide whether or not to enter him in the French Open.
Fabio Fognini eliminated the Scot from the Italian Open on Wednesday night following a three-set match that lasted over three hours.
Murray hasn’t won a match in each of the previous month’s three clay-court Masters 1000 tournaments, but on Sunday in Aix-en-Provence, he claimed his first championship since 2019.
Murray, who will turn 36 this week, hasn’t competed at Roland Garros since 2017. He must now choose whether to potentially play his final match on Parisian clay or to start preparing for the grass-court season.
He told The Guardian, “I’d still prefer to play, but we did agree that we’d communicate and make a decision as a squad after Rome.”
“That’s what I wanted to observe, before making a final decision, how my game felt, how I was playing, and how I was doing physically in some of the lengthier matches. We’ll talk about that in the coming days.”
Murray and Fognini have been rivals since their youth years, and after a close match, the Italian won 6-4 4-6 6-4.
“It was a pretty patchy match,” Murray remarked. “There was some excellent content as well as some quite mediocre. In the third set, he performed admirably. In the third, I played at a respectable level, but he played really well.”
As a result, Murray’s chances of earning a Wimbledon seeding were dashed, and late in the opening set, he got into an argument with umpire Mohamed Lahyani over a line decision.
Murray criticised the Rome supporters in response to an Instagram post about the incident, writing: “Stadium full of Italians yelling and whistling, believing I’m attempting to cheat Fabio out of point all because Mo couldn’t read a mark properly. Thank you, mate.”
