French Open: Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic of France came back from a set down to defeat Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula of the United States and win the French Open women’s doubles title for the second time.
Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula lost the French Open women’s doubles final 2-6 6-3 6-2 to Caroline Garcia and Kristina Mladenovic, adding to their Paris misery.
Gauff suffered her second final defeat in less than 24 hours, having lost in straight sets to top seed Iga Swiatek in the singles final on Saturday.
Garcia and Mladenovic won the title in 2016, and it was Mladenovic’s fourth women’s doubles trophy at Roland Garros, following victories with Timea Babos in 2019 and 2020.
She has six major double titles, including the 2018 and 2020 Australian Opens.
The Americans, who had only dropped one set on their way to the final, were broken early on but swiftly rebounded to take a 3-1 lead.
Gauff and Pegula took control of the set when Garcia sailed a forehand long on the second set point, giving them a 4-2 lead. Mladenovic smashed a volley into the net to give them a 4-2 lead, and another break placed Gauff and Pegula in command.
After reuniting and losing in the second round of the Australian Open, the French combo came back to go 4-0 up in the second, which they sealed with a Mladenovic smash.
Gauff, the youngest doubles finalist in Paris in 21 years, couldn’t stop their opponents’ run, as the French team took two early breaks to go up 4-0.
On their third match point, they won a victory with a Garcia smash.
