On her comeback to Roland Garros, Naomi Osaka was knocked out of the French Open in the first round by Amanda Anisimova.
The four-time grand slam champion, who withdrew from last year’s tournament due to mental health issues, was defeated in straight sets by 27th seed Anisimova 7-5 6-4.
The 20-year-old had already defeated Osaka in the third round of the Australian Open this year and is a 2019 French Open semi-finalist.
Osaka double-faulted twice in each set on the breakpoint. Osaka grabbed a 40-0 lead in the next game after the second, giving Anisimova a 4-3 lead, but the American maintained service.
Osaka, the former world number one, played with tape on her left Achilles tendon. When she was broken in the seventh game of the second set, she was stretching it and kicking it with her right foot.
Osaka started just before last year’s event that she would skip her mandated media appearances. She was fined $15,000 and threatened with expulsion after winning her first match in straight sets and failing to hold a news conference. She confirmed her resignation from the event the next day.
Britain’s Dart is eliminated in the first round
Harriet Dart of the United Kingdom just avoided the dreaded double-bagel in the first round of the French Open, losing 6-0 6-2 against Martina Trevisan of Italy.
In a first-round loss to Maria Sharapova at the Australian Open in 2019, the 25-year-old from London failed to win a game.
Dart must have feared a rematch after falling behind 6-0, 3-0, but she managed to win a couple of games before her early elimination from the event was confirmed.
