Citi Open: Emma Raducanu, the second seed, lost to Liudmila Samsonova in the Citi Open quarterfinals, bringing a stop to her impressive Citi Open run.
Despite a close first set, the Russian world No. 60 ultimately defeated Raducanu 7-6 (8-6) 6-1.
Samsonova sailed through the second set with nine aces and 33 winners overall after saving four set points on her way to winning the first.
With only eight victories and one ace to go along with 24 unforced errors, Raducanu was her own worst enemy as she battled to match Samsanova’s strength.
British No. 2 Dan Evans lost to Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in the ATP event’s quarterfinal match in three sets.
Evans fought back to win the second set with ease after dropping the first in a tiebreak.
He was unable to maintain that momentum in the third set, which the world No. 96 won 7-6 (7-5) 4-6 7-5.
In the Mexico final, Norrie will take on Medvedev.
The defending champion Cameron Norrie defeated Felix Auger-Aliassime to go to the Abierto de Tenis Mifel final, where he will face world No. 1, Daniil Medvedev.
At the second semi-final in Los Cabos, Mexico, the British No. 1 fought valiantly to a 6-4 3-6 6-3 triumph against the second-seeded Canadian in two hours and 19 minutes.
With his first victory over Auger-Aliassime in five meetings, Norrie kept pace with his goal of winning his third ATP Tour championship this year.
He will now take on Medvedev, who defeated Miomir Kecmanovic, the fourth seed, 7-6, 6-1, to secure the top slot in the global rankings at least through the end of the US Open the following month.
Norrie told reporters: “You always want to defend the title but it is complicated. The start was difficult but I played very well after losing the second set.
“I try to play at my best level and it is incredible to return to the final. I love playing in Mexico.”
