Madrid Open: Due to a calf injury, Ons Jabeur withdraws from the Madrid Open; Emma Raducanu of the United Kingdom will compete in Madrid in an effort to recover from her straight-sets loss to Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart last week. Tunisian won the title last year to become the first African winner of a WTA 1000 event.
Ons Jabeur, the defending champion, withdrew from this week’s Madrid Open because of a calf issue.
Three games into Saturday’s Porsche Tennis Open semifinal match in Stuttgart against Iga Swiatek, the Tunisian withdrew.
“Further to many medical exams done, it shows that I have a small tear in my calf and I will need more time to recover,” Jabeur, 28, wrote on Instagram.
“I regret to inform you that I will be unable to participate and successfully defend my championship at the Madrid Open this year. I want to wish everyone and the tournament the best of luck.”
Jabeur was slated to play either Romanian Ana Bogdan or Hungarian Anna Bondar in the second round of the 2022 Madrid Open after defeating Jessica Pegula 7-5 0-6 6-2 in the championship match to win the event and becoming the first African woman to do so.
Emma Raducanu from the United Kingdom will compete at the Madrid Open. In the round of 32 of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix, she was defeated in straight sets by Jelena Ostapenko and is hoping to bounce back.
Due to a knee issue, Karolina Pliskova, the former world No. 1, withdrew from the Madrid Open on Monday. The Italian Open will be held in Rome from May 9–20, and the Czech expects to be in good health for it.
Pliskoka sustained her injury in Stuttgart during a quarterfinal loss to world No. 1 Swiatek.
