British Tennis: Dan Evans has voiced concerns about the status of British tennis and thinks that Emma Raducanu’s success has hidden any flaws.
At the French Open, which begins on Sunday, there will only be three British players in the singles main draws—and no women, for the first time since 2008.
None of the 10 British players who competed in qualifying advanced past the semifinals, while 2021 US Open winner Raducanu withdrew alongside Andy Murray after undergoing surgery on both wrists and one ankle.
Before facing Australian Thanasi Kokkinakis in the first round of the Roland Garros tournament, Evans said: “They’ve been blessed to have a Grand Slam champion, and she’s a very excellent tennis player, but the rankings don’t lie, do they?
“Whether men or women, the rankings are accurate. Men’s, there aren’t many of us competing in qualifiers or main draws. I don’t want to recite the same things again and over. However, more has to be done than merely the best players. From the bottom up, that is.
“We now have a huge, huge habit of sending people to college. That, in my opinion, does not really assist. It will be fascinating. The grass last year, in my opinion, significantly helped cover some flaws. After their holidays, I believe there will be some introspection after the grass.”
Evans has long attacked the home system, and he recently chastised several of his British teammates for lacking drive and a willingness to toil away on the tour.
Evans is a late bloomer who served a drug prohibition and admitted to excessively liking the party scene. Evans is well aware of both the hazards and requirements for success.
You must put in a lot of effort, the world No. 24 said. I understand what it’s like to put in little effort and what results from that, as well as what it’s like to put in a lot of effort and reap the benefits.
