United Cup: After a brave Dan Evans defeated Albert Ramos-Violas in Sydney over the course of three sets, Great Britain advanced to the City Final of the United Cup.
Evans defeated the Spaniard in the first set, winning it 6-3, knowing that a victory would advance his team. However, he fell behind in the second set, dropping it 6-1.
In the decider, Evans came back, breaking serve at 2-3 and holding it to win 6-3 and advance Britain.
With the help of his GB teammates, who are being coached by former British number one Tim Henman, Evans persevered through a challenging match despite being sick.
With the 32-year-victory, old’s Britain won Group D after defeating the hosts Australia in the first round to take a commanding 3-1 lead in the match.
On Wednesday, they will compete in the City Final against the group’s victor, which includes Germany, the United States, and the Czech Republic.
“I don’t feel like my strongest self, but Tim Henman and my fantastic staff never stop pushing us. Having them all behind us makes it difficult to give up,” explained Evans.
“Take everything one match at a time. We’ve performed incredibly well on the court. We take great pride in our ability to operate well together as a team.”
Badosa defeats Dart with a comeback, giving Spain hope
Prior to it, Paula Badosa staged an incredible comeback to defeat Harriet Dart 6-7(6) 7-6(5) 6-1 and give Spain its first victory of the competition.
Badosa battled leg cramps while competing in her first match of the year to tangle with Dart and keep Spain in the contest.
The 98th-ranked Dart was the opponent the Spaniard sought to defeat for the first time. In the Billie Jean King Cup in November, the British player dealt Badosa her final defeat of the 2022 campaign.
But Dart was out in front right away. She overcame a gruelling opening set of 77 minutes to fend off a Badosa rally, saving two set points in the process.
Before the former world number two rediscovered his form and won four straight games to force a tie-break, which Dart won, he had built up a 5-2 advantage over the competition.
In the second set, Badosa raced out to a 3-1 lead, but cramps kept her from maintaining her lead, and Dart rallied back to force another tie-break.
In the tie-break, the Spaniard dominated and quickly took a 5-0 lead. She resisted a Dart comeback to force a final round.
Evans needed to win his tie in order to prevent the match from going to doubles deciding since Badosa had the momentum in the fourth set and defeated the Brit 6-1.
