Roger Federer Announces Retirement: Roger Federer has been dealing with a knee problem for the past two years and has had three surgery to treat it.
The 20-time Grand Slam champion will play his last match on a tennis court at the next Laver Cup in London, Roger Federer informed the crowd on Thursday. In a lengthy social media statement announcing the decision, Federer wrote, “tennis treated me more generously than I ever would have hoped.”
Federer last competed on a tennis court at the prestigious grass court tournament Wimbledon last year, where he lost to Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in the quarterfinals. He has been dealing with a knee problem ever since, for which he has had three procedures in the past two years. At the Laver Cup, he will play in a doubles match alongside longtime rival Rafa Nadal.
Social media erupted with congratulations shortly after the news, praising Federer’s significant contributions to the sport. Here are some responses:

It was inevitable and it has happened. But what joy while it lasted. Tennis, and all sport, will say a huge thank you to #RogerFederer. He played with our emotions as much as he played against the opponent.

The 41-year-old Swiss star is regarded as one of the greatest players to ever pick up a racket and has 20 Grand Slam titles to his credit.
The announcement comes weeks after Serena Williams, who has won 23 Grand Slam tournaments, announced her retirement from the game following her elimination from the US Open, which was won by Iga Swiatek.
