2023 Australian Open: Roger Federer has formally declined a request from Tennis Australia to participate in the 2023 Australian Open.
The master Swiss player has consistently been at the Melbourne Grand Slam over the years and took part in every tournament from 2000 to 2020. Due to injury issues, he was forced to miss the event in 2021 and 2022. The 41-year-old finished second in men’s singles behind Novak Djokovic by winning six of his 20 Grand Slam championships in Australia (9).
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that Tennis Australia made repeated attempts to convince the former World No. 1 to take part in the competition at Melbourne Park, which will begin on January 16. Federer made it plain, though, that he preferred to spend the first few years of his retirement at home with his family.
It was during the Swiss player’s farewell match at the 2022 Laver Cup that attempts were made to persuade the 20-time Grand Slam champion to compete at the first major tournament of 2023. During his last match, a Tennis Australia representative stated to the Herald that:
“Roger will always be welcomed with open arms.”
Although the goal has not been achieved this time, the organisers are certain that Federer will attend the Australian Open in 2024. As it will be 20 years since the Swiss went on to win the first of his six major trophies in Australia, they intend to make the occasion spectacular and unforgettable.
Former coach Ivan Ljubicic on Roger Federer’s post-retirement life: “He is still remaining active and he feels fine.”
Ivan Ljubicic, Roger Federer’s longtime trainer, said that the Swiss legend continues to play tennis whenever he has the chance.
After the 2022 Laver Cup, the former World No. 1 ended his tennis career. He competed in a doubles battle against Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe in his most recent encounter, teaming up with Rafael Nadal.
Ljubicic stated that Marion Bartoli, 41, has been working out on the tennis courts and is “still staying active” on The Tennis Podcast with Marion Bartoli.
“He continues to stay active, practise when he can, and feels fine. Not much has changed in his life. Since the tennis courts are where he feels most at ease, I know he would prefer to have fun there,” the Croatian stated.
